 ‘Can we play another game Grandad’, said Tess. ‘Please’, said Tim. ‘Well, we’ve already played hide and seek, played dominoes, built brick towers and played blind man’s bluff, and anyway it’s nearly time for bed’. ‘Aw please Grandad’, said Tess.

‘OK, just one quick game then. We’ll play Opposites’.

‘Opposites, what game is that?’, asked Tim.

‘Well I say a word and then you say a word that is just the opposite’.

‘Sounds easy’, said Tess. ‘We’ll see’, said Grandad. ‘Some opposites are easy, some are pretty hard. You can take it in turns. Are you ready?’ They both said yes.

‘You first Tess, ladies are always first. Sit,’ said Grandad. ‘Im already sat down’, said Tess. ‘No, that’s the word you have to find the opposite to you silly sausage. Let’s start again. OK Tess, Sit.’ ‘Easy peasy’, said Tess. ‘Stand ... the opposite of sit is stand’.

‘Well done Tess.

Ok Tim, Thick’. ‘Got it, said Tim, thin’.

‘Correct’ said Grandad.

‘Tess, hot’. ‘Cold’, said Tess.

‘Tim, hard’. ‘Gotcha,’ said Tim. ‘Soft’.

‘Here’s a harder one Tess. Dull’. ‘Hmm, the opposite of dull could be bright … or it could be shiny, or it might even be clever’. ‘Which is it Grandad?’ ‘Not sure myself’, said Grandad. But one thing I am sure of .. bedtime kiddiwinks.

And with that Tess and Tim went upstairs to snuggle up. Soon they would be asleep, not the opposite ... awake.
