Not Quite Aesop - A Silly Retelling of the Tortoise and the Hare KS2

Dave Corbett

Ridiculous … how can a tortoise beat a hare in a race?

That chap Aesop got it all wrong. What a clot.

NOT QUITE AESOP    Script    Dave Corbett 2025

Tim and Harvey were great friends. Tim was a tortoise and Harvey was a hare, so you might have thought they might not be friends … but they were.

‘I’ve been reading a story about a tortoise and a hare,’ said Tim one day. ‘It was written by a chap called Aesop, and it’s a very old story’.

‘What happens in the story then?’ asked Harvey the hare.

‘Well,’ said Tim, ‘they have a race … and the tortoise wins’.

‘What? A hare and a tortoise have a race?’ asked Harvey. ‘That’s a daft idea. The hare would always win. You’ve seen how fast I can run … and you, well you’re a tortoise and tortoises can’t even walk fast, never mind run fast’.

‘I think I could do pretty well,’said Tim. ‘OK then.” said Harvey, ‘let the two of us have a race and we’ll just see.’

Harvey was very confident, but so was Tim … he’d read the story where the tortoise won the race. He did a bit of practicing, just to make sure though. Tortoises have four legs which all work separately, so he had to concentrate very hard to make them all work together, and work fast. Now you’ve only got two legs, and even that can be hard sometimes can’t it.

The day of the race arrived, the crowds arrived, Tim and Harvey arrived. This was it. Quite exciting eh?

NOT QUITE AESOP Lyrics Dave Corbett 2025

There’s the gun and off they go,

one so fast and one so slow.

Whizz, whizz, just watch his feet. X3

Here comes Tim the Tortoise, he’s so slow.

Tim is concentrating … watch him go.

Harvey Hare is on the run,

won’t stop now until he’s won.

Whizz, whizz, just watch his feet. X3

Here comes Tim the Tortoise, he’s so slow.

Tim is concentrating … watch him go.

Now it’s finished it’s the end;

both of them are best of friends.

Doesn’t matter if you’re fast or slow, doesn’t matter in the end you know.

Doesn’t matter just how fast you ran, you can only do the best you can.
