Song and Story World
Swan Lake - quiet lake or noisy city ... which is best? KS2
Cyril and Cybil were swans. They became bored with swanning up and down the same river and round the same lake day after day, and, after giving themselves a bit of a paint job, (well blackberry juice actually), they headed off for some fun in the city. Not a great move.

SWAN LAKE Script Dave Corbett 2025
Swans are beautiful creatures, so majestic as they swan around on a river, pond or lake. But not all swans are graceful and majestic.
Cyril and Cybil were fed up with swimming round and round a lake all day. They wanted some excitement. They were also fed up of being a boring white colour like everyone else. Is white even a colour? Swans were more boring to look at than ducks or geese they thought. At least those had some colour. Swans were usually all white or sometimes all black .. apart from a bit of orange on the bill of course. You don’t often see a black swan, and you never see a colourful swan.
They used the purple juice of some blackberries to paint interesting stripes on themselves, said farewell to all the other boring swans, and set off into the sky, heading for adventure in the city.
It looked rather busy from up there, quite different to the green fields and calm lake they were used to. They swooped down low and heard the noise of the traffic. Cars, lorries, vans, motorbikes. There were loud honking noises, not nice like the ducks and geese in the river, but angry sounding. They almost crashed into a big red bus. The buildings towered above them, quite scary, and the streets were jammed with people rushing here and there. They didn’t look too friendly.
Even if they had wanted to, there was nowhere to land ... no stretch of welcoming water. There was no way they could land in a street, swans can’t do that, they need water to land on, and why would they want to land anyway? The place looked horrible and unwelcoming. Not what they had hoped for at all.
The two swans decided that city streets were no place for them, so they beat their wings harder, soared higher in the sky, and headed back home.
Oh, it was nice to be back. So peaceful, lots of friendly wildfowl, ducks, geese and lots of other swans of course, who were all very happy to see Cybil and Cyril again. This is where they fitted in, this was home. They washed off that silly blackberry juice and became part of the scene again. After all, birds of a feather flock together.
SWAN LAKE LYRICS. Dave Corbett. 2025
Graceful, so gracefully, gliding all around, graceful, not making any sound.
Stately, majestically, feathers oh so white, Stately, they’re such a lovely sight.
NARR: But Cyril and Cybil thought that was boring.
They wanted some exciting fun.
We want an adventure, want exciting stuff,
we want an adventure, we’ve had quite enough.
We want to be different ... want to break away.
We want to be different … we don’t want to stay.
NARR: So off they set, in search of adventure in the big city.
We want an adventure, need to spread our wings,
We want an adventure, do exciting things.
We want to be different ... want to break away.
We want to be different … we don’t want to stay.
NARR : But things didn’t quite work out as they had hoped.
The city was noisy and dirty. It had been much better in
their lake.
We had an adventure, a big mistake to make,
We had an adventure, let’s get back to our lake.
Stately, majestically, feathers oh so white,
Stately, they’re such a lovely sight.
Looks as if things have turned out right.
